- Start with the decision you need to make.
- Check source data before interpreting results.
- End with a clear next action and owner.
Start with the decision
A report should answer what changed, why it matters and what you should do next. A large dashboard is not automatically a useful briefing. Agree which decisions the owner needs to make and select measures that support those decisions.
Use the right sources
Marketing may need store orders, advertising costs and analytics. Finance may need accounting records, payment settlements, refunds and inventory costs. Technology may need build, test and incident records. Source availability depends on the customer’s tools and agreed access; a list of sources is not proof of an installed integration.
Check the numbers before interpreting them
Every comparison needs a period and a consistent definition. Check currency, time zone, duplicates, missing records and delayed updates. Advertising platforms may both claim the same sale; their attributed revenue should not simply be added together as unique revenue. Reconcile the report to business records where possible.
End with a practical next step
A useful briefing states the finding, its business implication, the evidence limits and the recommended action. Name the person who needs to decide. For example: investigate why settlement receipts differ from recorded orders before drawing a conclusion about cash performance.
